Organic Gardens
The “Greening” effort at Ransom Everglades School extends far beyond the classroom. An organic garden established in 2009 on the Middle School campus gives students a chance to think carefully about the many facets of sustainable food production and answer the call of author Richard Louv (Last Child in the Woods) to encourage students to spend more time outdoors. The Organic Gardening Club at the Middle School has been hard at work planting and waiting for their yield. Club members learn how to make fresh salsa with tomatoes, onions, lime, and cilantro from the garden. Our school chef clips the herbs from the garden, and everyone at the Middle School enjoys lunch enhanced by the herbs and spices from the garden. Recently, the club has grown carrots and the members are learning about how soil gains nutrients over a period of time and how those nutrients affect the size of the vegetable.
