Exploration Hall opened in 1991 as the first building on the George Washington University?s Virginia Science and Technology Campus as a gift from Robert H. Smith. This four-story building is home to academic program offices, several research centers and laboratories, technology-enhanced classroom facilities and computer labs, as well as the Gallery Lounge. It is also home to one of the largest earthquake simulators on the East Coast. In 2013, a solar sidewalk was unveiled linking Exploration and Innovation Halls at the intersection of GW Boulevard and University Drive. The landscaped pedestrian sidewalk boasts a solar-powered trellis and 27 slip-resistant semi-transparent walkable panels with photovoltaic technology that converts sunlight into electricity.
